- ** WHAT LINKTOOL DOES **
- The submission is a copy of Linktool 2.0 still in progress. Repeat,
- not finished!! It falls under the category of WORKS IN PROGRESS --
- mathematics (though it's not a Mathematica notebook!). It can be used
- to interactively enter and edit a knot or link, via mouse clicking, or
- by entering braid notation or Conway notation. You can then click the
- window into "Displayer" mode which evolves the link and re-displays it
- either with a normal curve, a rope texture, or other textures. You
- can then copy it to the pasteboard and paste it in some other
- application like WriteNow.
- It has been used here at the Geometry Center to produce pretty
- pictures of links to include in published documents. Its pictures
- were also used to illustrate an article in Science News.
-
- ** TECHNICAL STUFF **
- Linktool 2.0 was developed under system 2.1. Included are the
- executable "Linktool" plus 3 .nib files which must all reside in the
- same directory. Also, the directory LinktoolHelp must reside in this
- same directory, too. Under LinktoolHelp are the help files read in by
- the help panel.
-
- ** IMPORTANT **
- Linktool 2.0 is unfinished. A "finished" copy of Linktool 1.0 is
- available for anonymous ftp at geom.umn.edu. When 2.0 is finished
- (which will be before August 24, 1992), it will then be available
- there instead.
- Links can be saved in a number of file formats. If you use
- the "Linktool" format, this may NOT be readable by the final version
- of 2.0 (which may have a slightly different "Linktool" format).
- However, the "Editor" and "Matrix" formats are simple text files which
- WILL be readable by the final version of 2.0.
- Finally, the help files included were written for 1.0, so they
- will be outdated in some respects. Full documentation for 2.0 will be
- available when it's finished.
